AI Review
Tempus's financial headlines present a misleading picture of profitability. Reported revenue expanded sharply to 1.27 billion dollars in fiscal 2025 and 382.5 million dollars in the second quarter of 2026, largely because of acquisitions. While the company announced a headline quarterly profit of 5.6 million dollars, that number was completely driven by roughly one hundred million dollars in paper investment gains from marketable securities, hiding a core operating loss of 75.9 million dollars. Beneath the surface, the company continues to spend more cash than it brings in, with trailing twelve-month free cash flow at negative 273 million dollars. For retail investors, sustainable financial health requires regular business operations to turn cash positive rather than relying on accounting investment gains.

Profitability & Margins
Margins and Operating Efficiency
AI Review
Gross profit margins have climbed impressively, rising from fifteen percent in 2020 to roughly sixty-three percent in 2025. This improvement reflects automated laboratory processes and the growth of high-margin data licensing to pharmaceutical clients, which earns gross margins above seventy-five percent. Yet this gross-level success has not translated into operating profits. Operating margins remained deeply negative at minus twenty percent in 2025 due to massive research, development, and administrative overhead. Until high-margin software licensing becomes a much larger portion of total revenue, expensive laboratory overhead will continue to absorb gross profits.
