AI Review
Walmart's financial results present a tale of two businesses. Top-line revenue reached 713 billion dollars in fiscal 2026 and advanced to 736 billion dollars trailing twelve months, driven by non-discretionary grocery sales and trade-down traffic. However, reported net income of 22.1 billion dollars masks underlying friction, as recent operating profit gains were flattered by a temporary 2.9 billion dollar tariff refund that management must reinvest into consumer price cuts. The real financial engine is changing. High-margin digital advertising through Walmart Connect and third-party marketplace commissions are growing at double-digit rates, lifting operating income faster than physical sales. Yet, cash generation remains constrained, with free cash flow of 13.5 billion dollars trailing headline accounting profits.

Profitability & Margins
Margins and Operating Efficiency
AI Review
Walmart's profit margins are caught in a structural tug-of-war. Fiscal 2026 gross margin held steady at 24.9% while operating margin settled at 4.18%. On one side, high-margin advertising and digital seller fees inject pure profit into the business, successfully expanding service margins and offsetting rising store associate hourly wages. On the other side, food and consumables represent over half of total sales, anchoring the company to low-margin grocery economics. General merchandise import tariffs, higher fuel expenses, and competitive price rollbacks prevent consolidated operating margins from breaking significantly higher. Digital advertising defends overall profitability, but physical store realities keep a firm lid on total margins.
