Earnings and Revenue Trajectory
AI Review
PetroChina's headline financials tell a story of powerful upstream recovery masking downstream refining friction. Trailing twelve-month revenue reached approximately 424 billion US dollars, generating over 25 billion dollars in net profit. First-half 2026 net profit attributable to shareholders climbed 22% to reach a record 103.9 billion renminbi, driven by strong crude oil prices and a 29% operating profit jump in natural gas sales. However, this earnings strength is unevenly distributed across the business. Upstream exploration and natural gas marketing currently generate almost the entire corporate operating profit, while refining and petrochemical divisions struggle with industry oversupply and falling domestic fuel consumption. Future earnings stability depends on natural gas growth continuing to offset slower motor fuel sales.

Profitability & Margins
Margins and Operating Efficiency
AI Review
Profit margins show a sharp divide between highly profitable extraction operations and squeezed downstream processing units. Gross margins stabilized near 21.6% in 2025, while operating margins held around 8.4%, supported by upstream lifting costs remaining below twelve dollars per barrel and domestic natural gas price deregulation. Conversely, traditional refining margins face persistent headwinds from domestic petrochemical surpluses and electric vehicle adoption. Fortunately, expanding natural gas distribution margins provide a permanent cushion against motor fuel weakness. As cleaner natural gas forms an ever-larger portion of the sales mix, consolidated profit margins are establishing a durable, utility-like floor that protects return on equity near ten percent.
