Earnings and Revenue Trajectory
AI Review
ASM International's earnings demonstrate robust top-line momentum driven by advanced semiconductor manufacturing transitions. In the second quarter of 2026, revenue reached a record 1.00 billion euros, expanding 20% year-over-year as leading chipmakers prepared tooling for next-generation 2nm architectures. Quarterly net earnings surged 41% to 285 million euros, benefiting from strong operational leverage. However, reported financial headlines conceal critical nuances. A material portion of recent annual net income was bolstered by non-cash associate impairment reversals and foreign exchange gains rather than core tool sales. Additionally, while advance customer tool billings supported cash collections, working capital absorption and customer delivery lumpiness highlight that earnings remain tied to cyclical foundry expansion schedules.

Profitability & Margins
Margins and Operating Efficiency
AI Review
Profitability margins reflect formidable pricing power rooted in proprietary atomic deposition technology. Gross margins held firm at 51.9% in the second quarter of 2026, while adjusted operating margins reached 33.0%. Because atomic layer deposition is mandatory for sub-2nm transistor viability, foundries readily pay premium pricing for high-precision tool chambers. Looking ahead, margins are expected to stabilize near 31% to 33% rather than expand indefinitely. High-margin spares and maintenance services provide a durable profitability floor. However, escalating engineering payroll costs, increased competition in silicon epitaxy, and a diminishing share of lucrative mature-node Chinese tool sales will prevent further significant margin expansion over the forecast horizon.
