Earnings and Revenue Trajectory

AI Review

Alibaba's headline numbers tell a story of two opposing forces. In fiscal 2026, total revenue expanded 9% to CNY 1.02 trillion, demonstrating resilient activity across core retail and cloud computing. However, reported net income plummeted 74% year-over-year in the June 2026 quarter to CNY 10.57 billion. This sharp decline was not caused by falling customer demand, but by deliberate corporate spending on artificial intelligence research and heavy depreciation charges from newly commissioned servers. The critical change for investors is in cash generation. Free cash flow swung from a healthy positive surplus in fiscal 2024 to a trailing deficit of negative $11.4 billion. Management is intentionally funneling core marketplace cash into enterprise infrastructure, creating a temporary cash trough before software monetization takes hold.

Profitability & Margins

Margins and Operating Efficiency

AI Review

Operating profit margins have experienced severe optical compression, falling from 12.0% in fiscal 2024 to 5.8% in fiscal 2026. This contraction stems from two distinct drivers: defensive merchant subsidies deployed to protect Taobao against low-cost rivals, and a 300% surge in non-cash depreciation expenses as expensive AI hardware enters service. Underlying gross margins, however, held resilient near 40%. This margin deterioration is primarily cyclical and investment-driven rather than a permanent loss of platform pricing power. As newly implemented 0.6% merchant software service fees take hold and cloud infrastructure achieves mature enterprise utilization, fixed-cost operating leverage is positioned to restore consolidated operating margins toward double-digit territory.
